A Delaware motor vehicle bill of sale is a legally binding document that officially transfers the ownership of your old vehicle from you to the new buyer. Without it, the buyer may not be able to register the vehicle with the DMV.
Registering a Motor Vehicle
The vehicle must be registered to own and drive in Delaware legally. Although a bill of sale may not be necessary for registration, you’ll need it for any privately purchased vehicle. Most dealerships will handle the title and registration for you.
You can register your vehicle at your local DMV office. To do so, you will need to bring all the necessary documents listed below. You’ll receive your registration in the mail about two weeks after submitting your application.
Gather Required Documents
When registering your vehicle at the local Delaware DMV, make sure you bring the following:
- Bill of Sale.
- Record of a Vehicle Inspection.
- Application for Title.
- Certificate of Title.
- A Delaware Driver’s License.

- $25,000 for bodily injuries per person
- $50,000 for all bodily injuries per accident
- $10,000 for property damage
Additional Documents (If Applicable)
- Odometer Mileage Reading: For vehicles weighing less than 16,000 lbs and under ten years old. To report it, enter the mileage on the Certificate of Title in the section designated for the disclosure of odometer reading.
- Motor Vehicle Power of Attorney: If someone else is registering your vehicle on your behalf.
Submit Your Documents
In Delaware, vehicle registration is managed by the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). You can visit a DMV office at one of its four locations (New Castle, Dover, Wilmington, or Georgetown).
Ensure that all necessary documents are included and correctly filled out to avoid delays.

Payments can be made at any Delaware DMV office using cash, check, debit card, or major credit cards.
