An Iowa Motor Vehicle Bill of Sale is a document proving a vehicle’s transfer for a specific purchase price. The terms are agreed upon between a seller and buyer. Both parties and a licensed notary must sign the vehicle bill of sale.
Registering a Motor Vehicle
In Iowa, a vehicle must be registered no later than 30 days after purchase. If a vehicle owner establishes new residency in Iowa, they must register their vehicle within the first 30 days. Vehicle registrations are renewed annually. The County Treasurer mails renewal notices one month prior.
Gather Required Documents
The following documents are required to register your vehicle in the state of Iowa:

Proof of Ownership:
- Bill of Sale: Proof of vehicle transfer for a specified price, signed by both parties and a notary.
- Certificate of Title: Legal document proving ownership of a vehicle.
- Application for Certificate of Title and/or Registration (Form 411007): Used to apply for vehicle title and registration in your name.
- Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form 411077): Required to verify a vehicle’s mileage at the time of sale or transfer.

- $20,000 for bodily injuries per person
- $40,000 for bodily injuries per accident
- $15,000 for property damage
Additional Documents (If Applicable)
- Motor Vehicle Damage Disclosure Statement (Form 411108): This is only required for vehicles seven years old or newer.
- Vehicle Power of Attorney Form: If someone else will represent you when registering your vehicle.
Submit Your Documents
You must register your vehicle in person at your local County Treasurer’s office. If you are renewing a registration, you can do so online.
Pay Registration Fees
