Vermont Boat Bill of Sale Requirements

Vermont is a relatively easy state to please when it comes to using a boat bill of sale. For one thing, you don’t need to notarize the form for it to become legally binding. All you need to do is list the correct information and have both parties sign it.

For another, it’s a short form, including the year, make, and model of the boat, as well as the body or hull type, color, and vessel length. The Hull Identification Number (HIN) must also go on the form. If the boat is newer than the model year 2011, the seller must disclose the odometer reading in either miles or kilometers and hours. Lastly, the form will include the names of the sellers and new owner or owners, as well as the purchase price and date on which it was sold.

You can use a customizable template that includes all of the required sections.

Registering a Boat (After Purchasing)

Once you complete your bill of sale for a boat in Vermont, you can register the vessel with the state in your name.

Where to Register

Any time you buy or sell a vehicle or vessel in Vermont, you must provide a copy of that document to the Vermont DMV. Head to any Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles location to register your boat and pay the appropriate fees.

Documents Needed to Obtain Title and Registration

To have the title and registration transferred to your name, you will need to bring the following documents:

  • The signed and completed bill of sale and odometer disclosure, if applicable
  • An application for motorboat registration Form VD-037
  • A Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO) for new boats
  • The title for used boats or a Form VT-004 for a replacement title if the original has been lost
  • A check to pay registration fees, in amounts as seen below

Fees

Registration fees for boats in Vermont range depending on the vessel’s class and how long you want to register it for. Registration for Class A, Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 vehicles are $31, $49, $80, and $153 for one year, and $57, $93, $155, and $303 for two years. Although you can register some vehicles in Vermont for five years, this is not true for boats.

Exemptions

You do not need to register non-motorized boats in Vermont, including kayaks, canoes, paddleboats, and sailboats of all sizes.
