Exemptions
A Georgia trailer title registration is not required if:
- The vehicle was made in 1962 or earlier
- It counts as an agricultural, horticultural, or livestock vehicle
- It is an all-terrain or off-road vehicle
- It is a boat trailer
- It is a homemade trailer
- It is a nonresident’s vehicle
- It is a trailer weighing 2,000 lbs or less
- It is a vehicle not manufactured for highway use
In addition, title registration is optional in some situations. You may title a trailer if:
- It was manufactured between 1963-1985
- The owner on the front of the title has transferred ownership to you
- The owner on the front of the title has transferred ownership to a dealer who then transferred ownership to you
Special Requirements/Inspections
Georgia does not have a safety inspection requirement for trailer registration. If you wish to register a title for your new trailer, you can go through the process, pay the registration fee, and receive a registration. A safety inspection can be a good idea to ensure your trailer will be worth the investment. However, it is not legally required.
