South Dakota requires trailers, campers, and utility trailers to be titled and registered if they travel on public highways. Farm wagons and trailers do not need to be registered if they are only used for agricultural purposes on farm property.
Homemade trailers without VINs must have a VIN assigned and placed on the frame. The trailer must be inspected by law enforcement before the trailer can be sold or transferred.
Registering a Trailer in South Dakota
Trailers and other motor vehicles in South Dakota must be registered at their county treasurer’s office. Newly purchased vehicles (new and used) must be registered within 45 days of purchase. New residents must title and register their vehicles within 90 days of establishing residency in South Dakota.
A private seller can obtain a seller’s permit for the new owner while waiting for the title to be issued. This allows the new owner to use the vehicle while waiting for the title to be issued.
What Paperwork Is Required To Register a Trailer in South Dakota?
Trailers must be titled before they can be registered in South Dakota. South Dakota has steps that both the buyer and seller must take to ensure the title is transferred correctly.
- Application for Motor Vehicle Title & Registration must be completed
- The seller’s permit must be given to the buyer
- The seller must complete a Report of Sale form
- Excise taxes and wheel taxes must be paid
- The trailer license plate form must be completed, and the fee must be paid.
Excise taxes are not paid on trailers that are transferred without consideration, that is, gifts, inheritances, or transfers between parents and children or siblings.
Manufactured, homemade, or rebuilt trailers weighing less than 3000 pounds must apply to the county treasurer’s office for a VIN. The VIN is sent to the owner, who must attach the number to the trailer on either the tongue or the left frame rail. The application must state the reason for needing a VIN and that the owner built or rebuilt the trailer.
Trailer Registration Fees
Registration fees are handled by the county clerk’s office in your county of residence. Registration renewals can also be paid by mail or internet by residents with a valid South Dakota driver’s license. Trailer licensing fees are a one-time payment if the same individual owns the trailer, but registrations are annual.
