A New York motor vehicle power of attorney form is a legal document granting an individual (agent) limited authority to handle specific tasks related to another person’s vehicle with the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This includes transferring ownership, signing registration forms, and titling the vehicle, but not for vehicle registration in New York.
A general Power of Attorney (POA) is valid for motor vehicle transactions at DMV offices as long as it includes authority over all of the principal’s “chattels and goods.” However, for transferring a vehicle title certificate, the DMV requires the original title certificate and stipulates that the person transferring the title and the recipient must be different individuals. An automobile dealer or their employee is not permitted to use a general POA for vehicle transfers.
You do not need a POA to register a vehicle for someone else if you can show the proof of identity and date of birth of the applicant at a DMV office.
