What Is a Missouri Motorcycle Bill of Sale Form?

A Missouri motorcycle bill of sale is proof of purchase and a document that shows a motorcycle has legally changed hands between two private parties.

In addition to all the information outlined above, the Missouri motorcycle bill of sale will also need to be signed by both parties in the appropriate spaces.

Note that the Missouri motorcycle bill of sale will also be needed later on for the purposes of registration with the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR).

Is a Motorcycle Bill of Sale Form Required in Missouri?

Registration is required before a motorcycle can be legally operated in Missouri, and a bill of sale is one of the documents used in the registration process.

Do You Need a Bill of Sale to Register a Motorcycle in Missouri?

You can use a motorcycle bill of sale as a part of the registration process in the state of Missouri.

Owners have 30 days from the date the motorcycle was purchased to properly complete the title and registration.

You can renew your registration every one or two years depending on your needs, online at the Missouri Department of Revenue’s website or in person at any license office in the state.

To title and register a motorcycle, you will need the following documents:

  • The Certificate of Title, properly assigned by the seller to the buyer
  • A completed Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form 3019), which records the current mileage of the motorcycle at the time of sale, if applicable
  • A completed Application for Missouri Title and License (Form 108)
  • A photocopy of your valid state driver’s license
  • An identification number and odometer (ID/OD) inspection, if the title was issued out of state or country
  • A notarized Lien Release (Form 4809), if applicable
  • Proof that the applicable fees and taxes have been paid

Note that Missouri also requires all motorcycle owners to have proof of minimum liability insurance coverage before they can legally register and operate the motorcycle.

This includes a minimum of $25,000 in coverage per person for bodily injury, $25,000 in coverage per accident for property, and $50,000 in coverage per accident for bodily injury.

In addition, sellers must report the sale of the motorcycle to the DOR within 30 days of the sale.

The seller submits either a completed Bill of Sale or a Notice of Sale (DOR-5049) form to satisfy the requirement.

There are a few exemptions to the reporting requirement such as for sales to a dealer or out-of-state buyer.

How Do I Transfer Ownership of a Motorcycle in Missouri?

Transferring ownership of a motorcycle in Missouri requires you to properly fill out the back of the motorcycle’s Certificate of Title.

Using only blue or black ink, provide the buyer’s name and physical address. Then, record the sale price and the date the transaction took place.

You’ll also want to note the current odometer reading and have both the buyer and the seller print their names and sign in the appropriately labeled places.

Once completed, you can take the title and other required documents to a local DOR office for submission.

Motorcycle Title Transfer With a Bill of Sale Only

You cannot transfer a motorcycle title using only the bill of sale in Missouri. All other documentation must also be provided.

Does a Missouri Motorcycle Bill of Sale Need to Be Notarized?

In the state of Missouri, a motorcycle bill of sale does need to be notarized if the motorcycle has been rebuilt or if the Department of Revenue has made a special request for it.

It is optional in all other cases, but always recommended.

Buying and Selling a Motorcycle in Missouri

Buying or selling a motorcycle in Missouri is a straightforward process, but you’ll want to take a few essential steps to make sure things go as smoothly as possible.

Meeting With the Potential Buyer

When you’re talking about a transaction as large as this one, you’ll always want to make sure that the buyer and seller meet in person before any money changes hands.

This will give both parties the chance to confirm that the other is serious about the transaction and that everyone is proceeding with good intentions.

Negotiate the Terms and Conditions

Then, you’ll want to negotiate the terms and conditions of the transaction, including the sale price and sale date.

The buyer should have an opportunity to visually inspect the motorcycle to make sure that it matches up with any description that may have been previously provided.

How to Write a Motorcycle Bill of Sale in Missouri

When writing a motorcycle bill of sale for a transaction that is taking place in Missouri, you’ll always want to make sure to follow a number of important steps.

Step 1 – Fill in Buyer and Seller Information

You’ll want to begin filling out your Missouri motorcycle bill of sale by including all relevant information pertaining to the buyer and seller.

There are clearly labeled boxes on the form where you can fill out the name, address, and contact information of each party.

Step 2 – Fill in Motorcycle Information

Next, locate the box on the form labeled “Motorcycle.” Here, you’ll include all relevant information about the motorcycle at the heart of the transaction.

You’ll include the year, make, model, color, odometer reading, vehicle identification number (VIN), and more. You must also specify the sale date and the sale price.

Step 3 – Finish the Form and Get It Notarized

Finally, you’ll want to make sure that both parties sign the Missouri motorcycle bill of sale at the bottom of the form in the appropriate boxes.

At that point, you can have the form notarized using the section labeled “Notary” at the very bottom of the form.

Summary

In the end, a Missouri motorcycle bill of sale is an essential document if you’re going to buy or sell a motorcycle within the state, which is why you always want to make sure you have a complete and thorough document.
