What is a Nebraska Motorcycle Bill of Sale Form?

A Nebraska motorcycle bill of sale documents transfer of ownership and is used to confirm that the sale of a motorcycle between two parties was legally executed.

The bill of sale is not the only document that the parties will need during this process, but because of its far-reaching implications, it is among the most important.

Is a Motorcycle Bill of Sale Form Required in Nebraska?

In Nebraska, a motorcycle bill of sale or a Nebraska Sales/Use Tax and Tire Fee Statement (Form 6)is required to transfer ownership of a motorcycle from the seller to the buyer.

Do You Need a Bill of Sale to Register a Motorcycle in Nebraska?

A Nebraska motorcycle bill of sale is not required for registration. A motorcycle must be registered to be used on highways and roads.

A new owner has 30 days to register. That registration must be renewed annually online, by mail, or in person at the County Treasurer’s Office where the applicant lives.

To register a motorcycle, the following items will need to be provided:

  • An odometer disclosure statement. Record the current mileage of the motorcycle.
  • A Certificate of Title.
  • A valid copy of a Nebraska driver’s license.
  • Proof that all registration fees have been paid.
  • Evidence that any sales tax has been paid.

Nebraska also requires motorcycle owners to prove they carry insurance and meet minimum liability insurance coverage requirements.

That includes no less than $25,000 for bodily injury or death for one person, $25,000 to cover potential property damage that may occur and $50,000 for total bodily injury or death (necessary if more than one person is involved in an accident).

Note that it is recommended that you provide photocopies of all relevant documents, as the originals will not be returned to you after submission.

How Do I Transfer Ownership of a Motorcycle in Nebraska?

To transfer motorcycle ownership in Nebraska, the buyer and the seller must sign the Certificate of Title in the appropriate Seller and Purchaser sections.

The seller also completes the Odometer Certification section of the title. All relevant information about the buyer should be included in the Purchaser section of the title.

That title, along with a completed bill of sale and Application for Certificate of Title for the new owner, can then be taken to a Department of Motor Vehicles location to complete the process.

Motorcycle Title Transfer With a Bill of Sale Only

In Nebraska, a bill of sale cannot alone transfer a motorcycle’s ownership.

You also need the other documents mentioned above.

Does a Nebraska Motorcycle Bill of Sale Need to Be Notarized?

Yes, Nebraska requires notarization for a bill of sale created for this transaction.

Buying and Selling a Motorcycle in Nebraska

When buying or selling a motorcycle in Nebraska, there are several key steps that you’ll want to remember to take.

Meeting with the Potential Buyer

It makes good sense to have an in-person meeting between a buyer and a seller for virtually any transaction, but especially for one potentially as large as a motorcycle purchase.

This allows the buyer to make sure that the motorcycle matches any description they’ve been previously given and that they’re not about to lose their money to some type of elaborate scam.

This also allows the seller to confirm that they’ve located a buyer who is serious about continuing with the purchase.

Finalizing the Details

At that point, all the finer details can be discussed to the satisfaction of both parties.

It’s essential to set expectations by discussing the purchase price, the date ownership will be transferred, and other items to avoid misunderstandings later.

How to Write a Motorcycle Bill of Sale in Nebraska

Writing a motorcycle bill of sale in Nebraska is relatively straightforward, but it will require you to keep a few key things in mind.

Step 1 – Fill in Buyer and Seller Information

The top section of a Nebraska motorcycle bill of sale provides information about the buyer and the seller, including their full names, addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses.

Step 2 – Fill in the Motorcycle Information

Then, provide information about the motorcycle in the section labeled “Motorcycle Information.”

Use the designated spaces to specify the year of manufacture, the make, the model, the color, the odometer reading, and the vehicle identification number.

Step 3 – Finalization and Notarization

Add the purchase price of the motorcycle. Finally, all left is to have the form signed by both the buyer and seller and notarized so it becomes legally binding.

Summary

In addition to being required to transfer ownership, a Nebraska motorcycle bill of sale also helps protect the buyer and seller – making it a critical part of this process you don’t want to skip.
