What Is a Texas Motorcycle Bill of Sale Form?

A motorcycle bill of sale form for Texas is a legal document to help you transfer motorcycle ownership.

It provides a record of the sale and the terms of the agreement between the buyer and seller.

The bill of sale is often used as proof of the transaction and may be necessary to prove who the new owner of the motorcycle is.

Is a Motorcycle Bill of Sale Form Required in Texas?

Texas does not require a bill of sale for motorcycle sales transactions. While a bill of sale is not required, we encourage you to use one to document the details of your sale.

A Texas motorcycle bill of sale form proves the agreement between all involved parties and may be critical if there is a dispute about the transaction.

It can also help you transfer ownership, as the bill of sale contains many details required to buy or sell the motorcycle.

Do You Need a Bill of Sale to Register a Motorcycle in Texas?

Texas does not require a motorcycle bill of sale to register your motorcycle.

However, a bill of sale is still helpful for registering your bike with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

It contains much of the information you need to fill out the rest of your documents and proves that you are the rightful owner of the motorcycle.

Documents you need to register your motorcycle in Texas include the following:

  • A properly signed title
  • An Application for Texas Title and Registration (Form 130-U), signed and with the sales price included
  • Proof of liability coverage insurance for your motorcycle that meets minimum requirements
  • A liens statement for any additional liens on the motorcycle
  • An Affidavit of Motor Vehicle Gift Transfer if the bike is a gift
  • Your valid driver’s license or state ID
  • Any registration fees under Texas law

How Do I Transfer Ownership of a Motorcycle in Texas?

Transferring motorcycle ownership requires the seller to follow specific steps under Texas law.

The Texas DMV requires the seller to:

  • Sign over the motorcycle’s title and include the date of sale and odometer reading
  • Fill out the Application for Texas Title and Registration (Form 130-U) within 30 days of the date of the motorcycle sale
  • File a Vehicle Transfer Notification (optional but recommended to protect the seller)

If the motorcycle is from a dealer, the dealer will take care of many of these steps.

However, if you buy or sell your motorcycle in a private transaction, a bill of sale can help gather the necessary information for the transfer of ownership of the motorcycle.

Motorcycle Title Transfer With a Bill of Sale Only

If you do not have a title to the motorcycle, a Texas motorcycle bill of sale can be used as evidence of ownership for the title transfer.

Your bill of sale proves that you are the new owner of the motorcycle, even without an existing title.

Along with your bill of sale, you will need to provide the following:

  • An invoice, canceled check, or other evidence of ownership
  • An acceptable driver’s license or photo ID
  • A Bonded Title Application (Form VTR-130-SOF)

Does a Texas Motorcycle Bill of Sale Need to be Notarized?

Texas does not require your motorcycle bill of sale to be notarized.

However, notarization can help prove that the bill of sale is a legitimate document between the two parties.

It is up to you whether to have your bill of sale notarized.
