What is a Utah Motorcycle Bill of Sale Form?

A Utah motorcycle bill of sale is an official document that proves the ownership transfer from the seller to the buyer.

A Utah motorcycle bill of sale includes the identities of the buyer and seller, a description of the motorcycle including the year, make, model, and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), the purchase price, and the transfer date.

Utah has a Bill of Sale (Form TC-843) form available for use, or you can download or create your own.

What matters most is that you include the information on the document and all parties to the sale sign and date the form.

Is a Motorcycle Bill of Sale Form Required in Utah?

Utah only requires a motorcycle bill of sale in cases where there is insufficient evidence of ownership, for instance, if the motorcycle does not have a valid title.

In that case, you may need a bill of sale to prove that you purchased the motorcycle and did a VIN check yourself. You may also need a bill of sale for a first-time registration and title transfer.

Do You Need a Bill of Sale to Register a Motorcycle in Utah?

A bill of sale is only required to register a motorcycle in Utah if it is your first time registering the bike.

You may not need the bill of sale if you have other acceptable proof of ownership.

How Do I Transfer Ownership of a Motorcycle in Utah?

The seller of the motorcycle must provide the new buyer with either the original certificate of title or an Application for Duplicate Utah Title (Form TC-123) within 48 hours of the transfer.

If you use an Application for Duplicate Title, the buyer should confirm that the seller has signed the Application twice.

The buyer must make an appointment at the appropriate Utah Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV)  office to title and register the motorcycle.

You will need the following documents:

  • Certificate of Title or Application for Duplicate Utah Title (Form TC-123)
  • Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form TC-891) if the odometer reading is not on the title
  • Application for Utah Title (Form TC-656) completed by new owners
  • Safety and emissions inspection certificate (required in some counties)
  • Lease agreement information if you lease the motorcycle
  • Release of lien, if a lien still appears on the title
  • Driver’s license

Motorcycle Title Transfer With a Bill of Sale Only

You can do a Utah motorcycle transfer with a bill of sale with other supporting documents.

Use this checklist to determine what additional documents you must bring along with the bill of sale to your appointment.

Does a Utah Motorcycle Bill of Sale Need to Be Notarized?

You do not have to have the motorcycle bill of sale notarized in Utah.

However, buyers and sellers may choose to have the document notarized for legal purposes.

Buying and Selling a Motorcycle in Utah

Utah takes a hard stance on unlicensed and fraudulent auto dealers, known as “curbstoners.”

Curbstoners sell used motorcycles in vacant lots or along the street and are notorious for selling wrecked, salvaged, or untitled motorcycles.

The Utah Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division has a tip hotline at 801-297-2600 or toll-free at 1-800-662-4335 and an online reporting site at Utah’s Motor Vehicle Portal to report possible curbstoners and fraudulent sales.

Step 1 – Preparing Your Motorcycle for Sale

Make sure your motorcycle is clean and in good mechanical condition. Even an “as-is” motorcycle should be ready to be driven off. Utah has strict laws about selling totaled or salvaged motorcycles, so sellers should only attempt to sell such a motorcycle after researching the laws first.

Buyers should have the motorcycle examined by a mechanic before finalizing the sale. Lemon laws do not cover “as-is” or used sales.

Step 2 – Determining the Value of Your Motorcycle

Check price guides like Kelley Blue Book or JD Power and review local sales listings before posting your motorcycle for sale.

Have a good idea of what your bike is worth and what local buyers will pay. This will help you when it’s time to negotiate the price.

Step 3 – Advertising Your Motorcycle

Online marketplaces, newspapers, and forums are excellent for local sales. Motorcycle shops may also allow you to post flyers or ads.

Some used motorcycle lots may agree to keep your bike on the property, which is safer than leaving it in your driveway with a “for sale” sign.

Step 4 Meeting with the Potential Buyer

Negotiations for price and transfer date should occur publicly and during the day. Avoid exchanging payment and the motorcycle the first time you meet the buyer unless you already know one another.

Buyers might request a test drive in an enclosed space or parking lot.

How to Write a Motorcycle Bill of Sale in Utah (What to Include)

The motorcycle bill of sale should cover buyer, seller, and bike information.

A bill of sale is part receipt and part contract, showing that the parties met and exchanged a motorcycle for money.

Step 1 – Fill in Buyer and Seller Information

Your motorcycle bill of sale should include the following:

  • Buyer’s first and last name
  • Buyer’s address, city, and ZIP code
  • Buyer’s phone number and email address
  • Seller’s first and last name
  • Seller’s address, city, and ZIP code
  • Seller’s phone number and email address

Step 2 -Fill in Motorcycle Information

You should include the following information about the motorcycle on your Utah motorcycle bill of sale:

  • Year, make, and model
  • Color and body type
  • VIN
  • Any accessories or modifications
  • Odometer reading

Step 3 – Sale Information

  • Date of sale
  • Purchase price
  • Date of transfer if different from sale date

Step 4 – Buyer and Seller Signatures

If there is more than one seller or buyer, all parties must sign the bill of sale.

A motorcycle bill of sale does not need to be notarized. Still, a seller transferring a vintage or modified motorcycle may want to have the document notarized in case there are any legal issues after the sale.
