Why is a Snowmobile Bill of Sale Important?

Some states require snowmobiles to be titled and registered with their Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or the Department of Wildlife/Natural Resources.

Check with your state to determine if you must title and register a snowmobile following a purchase or transfer.

If required, a bill of sale acts as proof of ownership and contains the information necessary to title and register the snowmobile with the state.

Can I Create a Snowmobile Bill of Sale Online?

Yes, you can create a snowmobile bill of sale online. However, check with your state’s DMV before creating your bill of sale to ensure it contains all the required information.

Things To Consider When Selling a Snowmobile

Try to sell your snowmobile at the right time of year. October through January is peak snowmobile sale season because buyers want to use their machines right away.

Decide how much time you’re willing to put into the sale.

If you don’t want to field lots of calls or texts about a potential purchase or don’t have time to show your snowmobile to prospective buyers, consider having a broker or consignment lot sell it for you.

How To Sell a Snowmobile Using a Bill of Sale

Follow these steps to sell a snowmobile.

Step 1 – Prepare for the Purchase

Seller: The snowmobile should be cleaned, repaired, and ready for use. Even if you are selling it in summer, it should be operational. Replace any worn or broken parts.

Buyer: Research the different types and brands of snowmobiles. Learn about performance options. Decide what features you want and what you don’t need.

Step 2 – Advertise

Seller: Take good photos of your snowmobile from different angles. If you have action shots, use those. Write a description listing the features. Social media marketplaces and listings are good places for posting multiple images.

Buyer: Take the time to review multiple listings. Compare prices from different sites, and be alert for the same snowmobile with varying prices on different pages — this could be a scam. Use site filters to find the features you’re looking for.

Step 3 – Negotiate Price

Seller: Research the market value of your snowmobile before advertising and have an idea of its value and what local buyers are paying. If you are unwilling to haggle over price, your ads should say “firm offers only.”

Buyer: Review the prices of similar snowmobiles with the features you want in your area. Have a ceiling price that is your limit for negotiations.

Step 4 – Write Your Bill of Sale

Seller: Complete all sections of the bill of sale and finalize with the buyer. Some states may require a notarized bill of sale. If your state requires a notary, ensure that your signature and the buyer’s signature are notarized.

Buyer: If you are unsure of any terms or conditions of the sale, clarify them. Complete all sections of the bill of sale, finalize with the seller, and sign.

How To Write a Snowmobile Bill of Sale

If you’re wondering, “What should I do with the snowmobile bill of sale?” follow these steps to fill one out:

Step 1 – Seller’s Information

Add the seller’s name, address, and phone number.

Step 2 – Buyer’s Details

Add the buyer’s name, address, and phone number.

Step 3 – Snowmobile Information

Add the snowmobile’s make, model, year, color, engine CCs, serial number, and vehicle identification number (VIN).

Step 4 – Price and Sale Date

Add the purchase price, sale date, and transfer date if it’s different from the sale date.

Step 5 – Signatures

Both the buyer and the seller must sign.

If your state requires a notarized bill of sale, include a section for the notary’s acknowledgment or attach a page for the notary’s information.

Snowmobile Bill of Sale FAQs

How do I find out how much a snowmobile is worth?

Sites like JD Power and Snowmobile Trader let you compare snowmobile makes and models within a geographic range or with a set of features and styles.

Sellers and buyers should check here before venturing onto the advertising pages.

Where can I sell a snowmobile?

You can list your snowmobile anywhere you can advertise items for sale, but snowmobile-specific sites will give you more exposure and serious buyers.

Photos are best for selling your snowmobile, so places like Facebook Marketplace are ideal. There also are sites dedicated to snowmobile and outdoor recreational vehicles, such as Sledswap, that will post your ads.
