What Is a DJ Contract?
A DJ contract is a written agreement between a DJ (disc jockey) and a client that explains the terms for music and entertainment services at an event. It outlines key details, including the services provided, payment terms, the event schedule, and each party’s responsibilities.
Many DJs work as independent contractors, providing services on a freelance basis rather than as employees. A written contract can help make the arrangement easier to enforce if disputes occur.
A DJ contract works best when it is signed before any money changes hands. Both parties should review and sign the agreement before the event date, especially if the DJ requires a deposit, custom playlists, equipment setup, or possible overtime services.
When to Use a DJ Contract
You may use a DJ contract anytime you need to hire a DJ to perform at an event. Common events where you may consider using a DJ contract include:
- Weddings and receptions, where the DJ may provide music, announcements, and coordination with the event schedule
- Private parties, such as birthdays, anniversaries, or other holiday celebrations
- Corporate events, such as conferences, networking events, company parties, and award ceremonies
- Nightclubs and bars, where DJs may perform regularly or for special themed events
- Festivals and outdoor events, which may require sound equipment and longer performance times
- School events, such as dances or community events that may require music
A disc jockey contract is also helpful whenever the event includes special requests or extra services, such as custom playlists, lighting equipment, or sound systems.
If you’ll have other acts at your event, consider using a performance contract to outline the terms of their live act.
How to Write a DJ Contract
Follow the steps below to complete a DJ contract for your event. Be sure to include each section to help ensure that both the DJ and the client understand the expectations before the event.
Step 1 – Enter the State
Start your DJ contract by adding the state whose law governs the agreement and the date that the contract is created. This helps clarify when the agreement begins and which state’s law applies if a dispute arises.
Step 2 – Identify the Parties
List the DJ (service provider) and the client who is hiring the DJ. Be sure to include the full legal names, addresses, and contact information of both parties. This helps avoid confusion about who is providing the services and who is paying for them.
Step 3 – Describe the DJ Services
In this section, clearly explain all the services that the disc jockey will provide at the event. For example, services may include:
- Playing music during the event
- Providing equipment or speakers
- Setting up lighting or other audio equipment
- Coordinating playlists or music requests
You can also include important event details, such as the event date, location, and the start and end times of the performance.
Step 4 – Specify Payment Details
Explain how the client will pay and when the payment will be due. You can include the total cost of DJ services, the deadline for the remaining payment, and accepted payment methods, such as cash, credit card, or bank transfer.

Step 5 – Include Cancellation Terms
Specify what happens if the event is canceled or rescheduled. Clearly mention whether the deposit is refundable or non-refundable. If a notice period is required to cancel the event or if there are cancellation fees, you can mention it here.
Step 6 – Add Additional Contract Terms
You can also include additional provisions that clarify the event’s further responsibilities. For example, you may choose to include:
- Equipment responsibilities, such as who provides speakers or lighting, and whether the DJ brings their own equipment
- Set up and teardown of equipment
- Venue requirements, such as access to power and staging
- Liability limits if the equipment is damaged during the event
Step 7 – Sign the Agreement
Finally, both parties should sign and date the contract. Signing the DJ contract agreement template makes it a legally binding document between the parties.
