What Is a Lawn Care Contract?
A lawn care contract, also known as a lawn maintenance contract, is an agreement between a lawn care provider and a client for ongoing maintenance of a specific lawn or turf area. It covers routine services like mowing, edging, weed control, and fertilizing, which help keep the lawn healthy. The focus is on regular upkeep, not adding new features or making major changes.
When to Use a Lawn Maintenance Contract
A lawn maintenance contract is useful anytime you need to set the service frequency, what tasks are included, and how the work will be handled from visit to visit. You might use this type of agreement in the following situations:
- When starting work with a new lawn care client
- When setting up recurring services, like weekly or biweekly mowing
- When taking on one-time jobs, such as a first cut or clearing an overgrown lawn
- When handling seasonal services, like spring aeration or fall cleanup
- When maintaining residential or commercial properties that need regular upkeep
A lawn care contract only covers grass and turf maintenance. It doesn’t apply to full yard or landscape work. If the job includes planting, design, or hardscaping, use a landscaping contract instead.
What to Include in a Lawn Maintenance Contract
A lawn maintenance contract should focus on how the lawn is cared for from visit to visit, rather than just listing services. Here’s what to include:
- Contractor and client details with names and the exact service address. Include legal names of any businesses involved.
- Scope of services that defines mowing height, edging, weed control, fertilizing, and cleanup.
- Service schedule that sets weekly or biweekly visits, seasonal adjustments, and the start date.
- Payment terms that outline per mow or monthly pricing, when payment is due, and any late fees.
- Materials that clarify who pays for fertilizer, seed, and whether clippings are bagged or mulched.
- Contract length that states whether the agreement is ongoing or for a set season.
- Insurance that covers equipment damage, property damage, or injuries during lawn service.
- Access and cancellations that address rain delays, overgrown grass, locked gates, pets, or obstacles on the lawn.
These details make it clear what happens during each visit and how often the lawn is serviced. They also cover situations like weather delays or changes to the schedule. For example, a lawn care contract can state whether a missed visit is rescheduled or if an extra fee applies for cutting overgrown grass.
Need a way to bill clients? Use an invoice to track each visit and payment.
