A Minnesota boat bill of sale is an informational document that records all relevant details about the sale of a boat. It includes a record of the buyer and seller when the transaction occurred and the sale price.

Minnesota Boat Bill of Sale Requirements
In addition to the information above about the buyer and seller, a Minnesota boat bill of sale will include the hull ID number, VIN, title number, license plate number, serial number, and similar relevant information about the boat.
The value of the boat will be broken down based on the ship itself, the motor, and any trailers that are coming with it.
All taxes will be agreed to be paid, and any additional buyer and seller conditions will be outlined.
Registering a Boat (After Purchasing)
Registering a boat in Minnesota happens through the state’s Department of Natural Resources. Once registered, that documentation is valid for three calendar years. At that point, registration can be renewed either online or in person.
Where to Register
Registering a boat can happen in several ways, depending on your preferences. If you’re submitting a new application for registration, you can do so in person at the office of the Deputy Registrar of Motor Vehicles. Registration can also be completed online using the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources licensing service.

The documents needed to obtain title registration in Minnesota include the following:

- A properly completed watercraft title and registration application
- Proof that all applicable registration fees have been paid
Fees
Starting on July 1, 2019, the registration fees for boats in Minnesota are as follows:
- Boats owned by non-profit organizations (such as the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts) will cost a $44.50 fee.
- Pleasure boats less than 17 feet in length (measured from bow to stern) cost an $18.00 fee.
- Pleasure craft between 17 and 19 feet in length costs a $27.00 fee.
- Pleasure craft between 19 and 26 feet in length costs a $45.00 fee.
- Pleasure craft between 26 and 40 feet in length costs a $67.50 fee.
- Pleasure craft over 40 feet in length costs a $90.00 fee.
- Virtually all applicants will also pay an additional $10.60 fee for an aquatic invasive species surcharge.
Exemptions (If Applicable)
From registering
- Non-motorized boats that are 10 feet in length or less do not need to be registered.
- Boats owned by a person from a state that does not require registration do not need to be registered as long as that boat is not in Minnesota for more than 90 days.
From titling
- If the boat is from out of state, a title is not required so long as a bill of sale can be provided.
