Registering a Trailer in Wyoming
Wyoming’s motor vehicle law requires that most trailers have proper registration. You may also need to secure a title and vehicle identification number to go through the registration process.
Every resident must register their trailer if they meet any of the following requirements:
- Have lived in the state for 120 days or more
- Own a property or business in the state
- Secure a Wyoming hunting or fishing license
- Apply for public assistance
- Register to vote in the state
The only exception is full-time military members with their trailer registered in another state.
What Paperwork Is Required To Register a Trailer in Wyoming?
When you go to register your trailer, you will need the following items:
- Registration application
- Title
- Wyoming trailer bill of sale
To apply, go to the clerk’s office in the county seat where you live, or you can complete the process by mail.
Fill out the application form before you go. All the data you need should be on your bill of sale for the trailer in Wyoming.
Trailer Registration Fees
You will have to pay a fee to register your trailer depending on weight:
- 1,000 pounds or under: $5
- 1,001 to 3,500 pounds: $30
- 3,501 to 4,500 pounds: $40
- 4,501 to 5,500 pounds: $50
- 5,501 to 6,000 pounds: $70
- 6,001 pounds and over: $90
Veterans who were prisoners of war or those receiving 50% or more disability compensation can be exempt from paying fees for one vehicle or trailer. Members of the Eastern Shoshone or Northern Arapaho Indian tribes living on the Wind River Indian Reservation or other Indian land are entirely exempt from fees.
Title for Trailer
Note that a title may not always be a requirement. Light trailers, those weighing under 1,000 pounds, have no titling requirement if purchased before January 1, 2010.
If the purchase occurred after January 1, 2010, you must complete a Title Application-VIN/HIN with the county clerk’s office. You will also need to provide the following documents:
- Manufacturer’s certificate of origin for new trailers
- Statement of MSRP if it is new
- Bill of sale
- Proof of paid sale tax
Wyoming Statutes 31-2-101 suggests securing a notarized trailer bill of sale in Wyoming to assist in the titling process.
The clerk may also require an Affidavit of Vehicle Ownership and Bond if the seller cannot provide sufficient proof of ownership. If it is worth over $600, you must secure a bond of double the trailer’s value.
If you do not have a VIN, you must get a state-assigned number from WYDOT Motor Vehicle Services and have a law enforcement inspection to obtain a Certificate of Assignment, which you take to the clerk when securing a title.
Insurance
Insurance is not a requirement for trailers since there is no motor. Usually, your auto insurance policy will cover it. You might be able to add additional protection, but be sure you have a copy of the Wyoming trailer bill of sale PDF, title, and registration for the insurer.
