A South Dakota medical power of attorney lets a person designate someone who can make healthcare-related decisions for them if they can’t act for themselves. Before a medical POA goes into effect, the attending physician must declare that the principal has lost their ability to make decisions. In South Dakota, this document is also known as a durable power of attorney for health care.
