Registering a new trailer in Oregon will require an Oregon trailer bill of sale form to protect both the buyer and the seller.

Published March 31, 2023

Simplify the transfer of ownership for your new trailer with an Oregon trailer bill of sale. A trailer bill of sale in Oregon should include the following:

  • Buyer’s name, address, and signature
  • Seller’s name, address, and signature
  • Sale date
  • Sale amount
  • Description of the trailer, including make, model, and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), if available
  • Trailer’s loaded weight
  • Details about the trailer’s construction and materials, if necessary

With a bill of sale for your trailer in Oregon, you have a legal document that verifies your ownership and confirms essential legal details.

Registering a Trailer in Oregon

If you purchased a trailer in Oregon, state law might require you to register the vehicle. The state largely bases registration requirements on the trailer’s loaded weight. Trailers that weigh 1,800 pounds or less when fully loaded do not need a title or registration.

However, if your trailer weighs more than 1,800 pounds, you must complete an Oregon vehicle registration like a passenger car.

You can also apply for a trip permit if your trailer will only exceed 8,000 pounds for one trip. This allows you to temporarily operate your unregistered or differently registered trailer for the permitted trip.

What Paperwork Is Required To Register a Trailer in Oregon?

To register your trailer in Oregon, you must first title it. You may provide the following documents to your local Driver & Motor Vehicle Services (DMV) office:

  • Title application
  • Original title or proof of ownership
  • Out-of-state registration
  • Oregon trailer bill of sale
  • Previous bills of sale
  • Original lien releases, if applicable
  • Vehicle identification number (VIN) inspection, if applicable
  • Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO)

Trailer Registration Fees

Light trailers over 1,800 pounds and under 8,000 pounds loaded are subject to most of the same taxes and fees as passenger vehicles in Oregon. When you register your trailer, you may pay the following fees:

  • VIN inspection fee
  • Privilege and use taxes
  • Title and registration fees
  • Plate fees

Your fees will differ depending on your trailer’s weight and use. For instance, heavy vehicles that weigh over 26,000 pounds of weight must register at the heaviest loaded weight and pay an annual heavy motor vehicle registration fee. If you have questions about fees and taxes for your Oregon trailer registration, contact your local DMV office.

Special Requirements and Inspections

All trailers in Oregon must meet equipment safety standards consistent with ORS § 815. This requirement exists for all trailers, regardless of size. However, larger and heavier trailers must meet more stringent safety guidelines.

Commercial trailers must undergo an inspection every 12 months to comply with US Department of Transportation guidelines. To learn whether your trailer meets safety requirements in Oregon, contact your local DMV.
