Registering a Motor Vehicle
The vehicle registration process must be done within ten days of purchase and in person at a Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office if the resident lives within 50 miles of one. Otherwise, the registration can be completed online by following the instructions on the Remote Alaska Title Procedures page and filling out the Application for Title and Registration (Form 812).
All additional required documents can be submitted by mail. The registration is valid for two years.
Gather Required Documents
The following documents are required to register a vehicle with the DMV in Alaska:
- Application for Title and Registration (Form 812): The vehicle transaction application.
- Bill of Sale.
- Vehicle Title: Provide a photocopy of the vehicle’s title if there is a lien against the vehicle and the title is held in a different state or the lien release if applicable.
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
- Proof of Insurance: Confirms that the vehicle owner complies with the minimum requirements, providing coverage in the event of an accident.
Additional Documents (If Applicable)
- Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form 839): If the vehicle is newer than 2011, with an unladen weight of fewer than 12,000 pounds, and self-propelled.
- Motor Vehicle Power of Attorney: Only needed if someone else is signing on your behalf.
