A Virginia medical power of attorney is a document that lets you choose someone to be in charge of critical healthcare decisions if you become sick. The person you appoint (called your agent) can only start making decisions on your behalf if you can’t communicate your wishes. This document is also known as an advance directive for health care in Virginia.

- Revocation: You can sign and date a revocation of power of attorney document to cancel the original agreement. You may also verbally express your decision or destroy the original document (§ 54.1-2985).
