A W-9 is an IRS tax form used typically by freelancers and independent contractors to send over their Tax Identification Number to businesses they’ve worked with during the tax year.
In addition, the W-9 form is also to be used by individuals and business entities receiving money in the following situations:
- Real estate transactions
- Mortgage interest
- Acquisition or abandonment of secured property
- Debt cancellation
- IRA contributions
The business/payer uses the W-9 form you send to prepare the 1099-MISC form.
